How To Dye Pasta For Crafts or Sensory Bins
Materials
Gloves
Uncooked pasta
Baking sheet
Parchment paper
Rubbing alcohol or vinegar

Instructions
Step 1: Gather materials.
Before you dye pasta for sensory activities, you need to gather all the materials listed above to ensure that you have everything within reach while you complete this activity. Getting everything you need out beforehand will make this fun activity a breeze, especially when doing it with your kids!
Step 2: Prepare pasta.
Start by putting on your gloves to make sure your hands are clean and won’t get covered in dye. (However, if they do get covered in dye, here’s how to remove food coloring from skin.)
Separate the pasta into small batches, one batch for each color you plan to dye your pasta. Then, spread one batch of the pasta on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper as this will make it easier to mix and dye evenly.
Step 3: Mix dye.
In a large container or plastic zipper bag, add a few drops of food coloring. Then, dilute the food coloring by adding rubbing alcohol or vinegar. I recommend using approximately 1 tablespoon of rubbing alcohol or vinegar for every few drops of food coloring.
The exact ratio will depend on the intensity of the color you want. You can even mix two colors together to create custom colors. I usually let the kids go rogue on this and pick their favorite colors! It is a great way to get them involved.
Step 4: Dye pasta.
Add your first batch of pasta to the plastic zipper bag or container with the dye solution. Zip the bag closed tightly or firmly shut the container to ensure there are no leaks. If any leaks occur, clean up quickly with paper towels to avoid stains or keep stain remover nearby.
Shake or knead the bag or container to evenly coat the pasta with the dye solution.
Step 5: Let it sit.
Now, allow the pasta to sit in the dye solution for around 5-10 minutes. This will ensure the pasta absorbs the color completely.
Step 6: Dry pasta.
Once the pasta is dyed and has completely soaked up the color, remove it from the dye solution. Spread the dyed pasta out on the lined baking sheet to dry. Make sure all the pieces are spread out and not touching each other to prevent them from sticking together.
Let it dry completely before using it in crafts or in your sensory table. This could be only a few hours or overnight. Once it is dry, store it in an airtight container, and pull it out when you’re ready to play!
Step 7: Play!
