Is the global renewable energy market too hot, too cold, or just right? 👱♀️ 🐻 🐻 🐻 The feeling so far at Financing Energy Transition is that the sector has taken great strides, and areas like solar are particularly hot investment prospects in 2024. Though I don't think anyone would complain about it being 'too hot'!However, there is still a huge amount needed to be done to achieve the global energy transition, which a significant increase of capacity required. This will include investment in the projects themselves, but also the supply chain, the transmission network, and supporting sectors like energy storage. So, some parts of the sector are hot compared to where they have been, but they need to go even further if renewables are to maximise their potential. What do you think? And are there any fairy tales you'd apply to the market?#FinancingEnergyTransition

Thanks to everyone who joined us at Financing Energy Transition 2024 and the Wind Investment Awards yesterday.Great to hear from so many industry experts about wind, solar, energy storage and power-to-X; and to catch up with connections old and new. There are no flattering photos of me as I spent most of the day hunched over a laptop updating the Tamarindo social media feed, but I've attached one of me doing my job! 💻📱✒ You can check out the conference gallery here: https://lnkd.in/eic99Hj7And the awards gallery here: https://lnkd.in/ea4atAPFI'm now taking a bit of time off for half-term as I haven't had a break since the start of the year, and will be back on 3rd June. Great to hear more discussion about the importance of Chinese wind turbine makers to the global energy transition at Financing Energy Transition today. This support for Chinese turbine makers expressed by speakers Jonathan Cole (Corio Generation) and Lucy Heintz (Actis) tallies with the result of a poll that I ran recently after calls for UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to stop Mingyang Smart Energy investing to build a turbines factory in Scotland. Most (52%) respondents said the warnings about MingYang investing in a new Scottish factory were overblown. A further 29% said they should be taken seriously because of national security concerns, and the rest didn't know.Clearly, this is a discussion that will run and run. But can we deliver an energy transition cost-effectively without Chinese turbine makers?#FinancingEnergyTransition

On my way to the Financing Energy Transition 2024 conference by Tamarindo in London and nice to catch a glimpse of one of my favorite places: the Natural History Museum.Historic building. Historic creatures. And plenty of discussion today at the Millennium Conference Centre about the historic challenges facing us with the energy transition.Plus, my suit is dry too. Would this have been a better day to call an election? 🌧🗳I'm posting on the Tamarindo thread all day including...💻 The challenge we all face: https://lnkd.in/eNJzD-_4💻 Goldilocks era for renewables: https://lnkd.in/erFR7EV3💻 Chinese turbine makers: https://lnkd.in/erFfFXV8💻 UK offshore wind supply chain: https://lnkd.in/edRBtrkgA Word About Wind | Energy Storage Report

With UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announcing a general election on 4th July, there will be a great deal of discussion about UK energy policy in the weeks ahead. Both The Conservative Party and The Labour Party have made shifts to their renewable energy and net zero policies in recent months. For example, last September, the Conservative government announced it was going to delay the transition to electric vehicles from 2030 to 2035. Sunak also announced the end of an effective ban on new onshore wind farms in England, but has not followed with planning policies that have unleashed investment.Meanwhile, Keir Starmer's Labour Party has committed to "make Britain a green energy superpower", with specific policies including setting up a public clean energy company called Great Britain Energy. But it has also faced criticism for rolling back on a pledge to spend £28bn a year on green energy projects. In addition, there has been a great deal of discussion in recent months about renewable energy policy in Scotland following changes in the leadership of the Scottish National Party (SNP); and we would also expect traditional pro-green parties such as the Liberal Democrats and Green Party of England and Wales to come out with their own renewable energy announcements too. We'll be looking this in greater detail in A Word About Wind in the coming weeks -- and expect discussion about UK policy to feature at our annual Financing Energy Transition conference in London tomorrow.#UK #renewableenergy #policy #generalelection

Vestas has won a conditional agreement for turbines totalling 1GW for a major offshore wind project in northern Europe. The company has not revealed further details about the agreement, but said it would do if it leads to firm and unconditional orders. The project is set to be developed in two phases. And so the hunt begins. Feel free to drop me a DM -- off the record, of course! -- if you know more. 😉

Equinor has won final support from the New York State Public Service Commission to start building the 810MW Empire Wind offshore wind farm. The commission yesterday awarded the Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity that authorises the start of construction on transmission facilities for the development. This is a crucial step for the scheme, which is due to start producing power in 2026.Molly Morris (pictured), president of Equinor Renewables Americas, said: "With this authorization in place, combined with other federal, state and local authorizations, critical construction can begin in Brooklyn that will help connect the 810MW of renewable energy produced by Empire Wind 1 to the New York City grid. Equinor appreciates the leadership of Governor Hochul and the work of the PSC as we proceed into this exciting new phase of the project.”New York Governor Kathy Hochul said:“Offshore wind is a critically important part of our fight against climate change, and today’s decision will help move forward a zero-emissions electric grid that will provide long-term benefits to all New Yorkers.”https://lnkd.in/eG-MtmUZ#offshorewind #NewYork #construction #investment
