A Delicious Leftover Mashed Potato Recipe

Even though these fried wontons are perfect for using up leftover mashed potatoes, you can still easily make this wonton recipe if you don’t have leftovers! Make a batch of our Perfectly Smooth Mashed Potatoes or even grab store bought, ready made mashed potatoes!

We don’t want you to have to wait to make these delicious, fried appetizers so we like to give you options.

The idea for these fried wontons came from our love of poutine. Poutine, in case you haven’t had it before, is made up of french fries with cheese and gravy on top. Of course there are many, many variations of poutine, some of which we have here for you like this Shrimp Poutine or our fun summer Corn Dog Poutine that our boys love.

So the basic idea here with these Fried Poutine Wontons is that we’ve tucked the mashed potatoes inside with cheese, wrapped it up with a wontont wrapper and fried it until crispy on the outside and creamy and cheesy on the inside.

Dip that fried goodness into thick brown gravy and just try to stop eating them!

What Are The Ingredients For These Fried Poutine Wontons?

This appetizer recipe is another one of those recipes that you can add a lot of other ingredients, besides the basics we’ll list here. You could add different kinds of cheese, for sure. Vegetables like chopped broccoli or spinach, and even a protein like sausage or leftover ham!

Wonton Wrappers: You can find wonton wrappers right in the produce section fo your grocery store. They come in different shapes sometimes but for this recipe we’re using the square ones.

Mashed Potatoes: Leftover mashed potatoes work perfectly, whip up a batch from scratch or grab some already prepared at the grocery store.

Mozzarella Cheese: Mozzarella cheese was our go to for these wontons, but you can add whatever kind of melting cheese you want to. Swiss, gruyere, cheddar or American are all good options!

Eggs: The eggs are to seal the edges of the wonton wrappers so that they don’t come apart when frying.

Brown Gravy: Like we said, you can use our homemade Brown Gravy recipe, or grab a store bought brand that you like.

Oil For Frying: Vegetable or canola oil will work best for frying these wontons, olive oil has too low of a smoking point and also will give a flavor to the end product.

  2. Add a tablespoon of mashed potatoes to the center of a wonton wrapper, then place a piece of cheese in the center of the mashed potatoes.
  3. Fold the edges of the wonton wrapper to form a triangle and seal with the beaten eggs. make sure the edges are sealed very well so that the potato filling doesn’t leak out as you are frying.
  4. Fry the wontons in batches, depending on the size of your pot, for 2-3 minutes until golden brown, then remove to a paper towel lined plate to drain. Repeat with the remaining wontons.

Can You Make These Fried Appetizers Ahead Of Time?

You can, but not too much ahead of time. Once these wontons are fried, you can keep them warm in the oven for up to 2 hours. Much longer after that and they will loose some of their crispiness, and we wouldn’t want that to happen.

If you want to make these Fried Poutine Wontons in big batches and freeze them you can do that too! Let the wontons cool completely after frying and then freeze them in freezer bags in a single layer so that they don’t stick together.

Bake the wontons at 400 degrees while still frozen for 15-20 minutes until the centers are warmed through. Don’t let the wontons defrost or they will be soggy instead of nice and crispy.

You can see where we we didn’t seal one of the edges here all the way and some of that potato filling started to peak out. I’m telling you guys, that potato center stuffed with cheese is one of the most delicious things you’re ever going to taste!

On that note, make sure the mashed potatoes that you’re using are seasoned correctly, otherwise you won’t have a tasty potato filling. Give the mashed potatoes a taste before you start stuffing your wontons so that you end up with the most flavor possible!

Try and serve these Fried Poutine Wontons when they’re hot, that’s when the cheese is still soft in the middle and oozing out when you pull them part. Just take a look at that cheese! Man, there’s nothing better than all those cheesy, fried carbs, am I right?

    FAQs

How do you keep wontons crispy after frying? ›

The best way to keep fried foods crispy? Just place them on a cooling rack set over a baking sheet. If you're frying multiple batches, throw the whole setup into a low oven to keep everything warm as you keep frying and adding to the rack.

Can you make mashed potatoes ahead of time and reheat them? ›

Make-ahead mashed potatoes are a great option for the holidays. You can do nearly everything — boil, peel, and mash; stir in milk and salt — up to two days ahead. Before serving, reheat. Adding butter at the last minute makes them taste freshly mashed.

How do you get moisture out of mashed potatoes? ›

    Reduce Them Over Heat

You can also thicken your mashed potatoes by continuing to cook them on the stove with the lid off. Heat draws the excess moisture out of runny potatoes, leaving you with a denser finished product.

What is the best oil for frying wontons? ›

I like to use either peanut oil or vegetable oil for deep frying. Both are neutral flavored and have a high smoke point. They can handle the amount of heat needed to make sure that your wonton strips fry up crispy without absorbing too much oil.

How do you keep wontons from getting soggy? ›

Nobody likes a soggy Fried Wonton, and there's a great trick to getting the wrapper ultra crisp. Instead of sealing the wrapper shut like an envelope with water, you leave the majority of the folded wrapper unsealed, using just a dab of water to pinch the ends together.

Why do mashed potatoes not reheat well? ›

It can be tricky to reheat mashed potatoes on the stovetop because you can sometimes overstir (which leads to gluey potatoes), or understir (which leads to scorched pots). To avoid all this, try a double boiler approach: Place the potatoes in a bowl (stainless steel works best).

How do you reheat mashed potatoes and gravy? ›

    Reheat in the Oven
    1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
    2. Add a dash of cream or milk, and some more butter to the dish before baking.
    3. To further avoid dryness, don't skimp on butter and other dairy products.
    4. Reheat the potatoes until they're warm throughout—the potatoes should reach 165 degrees before serving.

How do you make leftover mashed potatoes creamy again? ›

You can easily revive leftover mash. Place the mash in a small pan with a little butter and some milk. Heat the mixture stirring constantly so that the mask absorbs all the milk, when the mixture is very gently simmering let the milk evaporate whisking to incorporate air. Serve immediately.

How do you reheat mashed potatoes without drying them out? ›

If you are reheating them in the oven, stir in the liquid and butter pieces, then spread the potatoes out in a baking dish. Cover with aluminum foil to keep the potatoes from drying out. Reheat at 350˚F for 20 to 30 minutes, or until the potatoes reach 165˚F.

Do leftover mashed potatoes need to be refrigerated? ›

Mashed potatoes should easily last three to five days in the fridge if stored correctly and within two hours of cooking. This means ensuring there isn't any moisture buildup under the lid that could encourage the growth of bacteria.

Why did my mashed potatoes turn out like glue? ›

When too much starch gets released, the potatoes become gummy, gluey, and unappetizing. Overworking the potatoes can happen in a couple ways: either by simply handling them too much, or by using a food processor, blender, or similar tool, which mixes the potatoes too aggressively.

Can dogs eat mashed potatoes? ›

Can dogs eat mashed potatoes? Yes, as long as the potatoes are roasted and not boiled and no salt, seasonings, milk or butter is added your pet can enjoy this all-time favourite dish. However, there isn't much nutritional value your dog will be able to get from eating mashed potatoes.

Does soaking potatoes in cold water make better mashed potatoes? ›

Soaking potatoes in water helps remove excess starch. Excess starch can inhibit the potatoes from cooking evenly as well as creating a gummy or sticky texture on the outside of your potatoes. Cold water is used because hot water would react with the starch activating it, making it harder to separate from the potatoes.

How do you keep wontons crispy? ›

Try dusting off the flour as much as you can beforehand and fry the wontons on low to medium heat for about 30 seconds to 1 minute or until the wrappers are golden and the bubbling starts to subside (a sign that the wrappers are crispy.) Tip : Remember, keep the heat medium low.

How do you keep wontons crispy for a party? ›

I've researched online best methods to transport these crispy treats since I want them to arrive as fresh as possible. So far I believe the best I can do is open the container as soon as I pick them up, put some paper towels on and put them on the passenger seat with the seat heater on.

How do you keep fried wontons warm? ›
