That’s one of the things I love about this recipe. You can assemble them ahead and bake them before serving.

To make ahead: Follow the recipe instructions up to the point before baking. Cover the baking sheet well and store the stuffed mushrooms in the refrigerator for 3 days.

To heat and serve: About 45 minutes before serving, remove the cover from the baking sheet and bake them as directed. They may take an extra few minutes since they are chilled in the refrigerator.

FAQs

How do you deepen the flavor of French onion soup? ›

A few sprigs of thyme and a bay leaf elevate the soup even more, but I take it a step further, adding a splash of fish sauce for complexity and depth—don't worry, it won't taste fishy—and a hit of cider vinegar to balance some of that oniony sweetness.

What can I use instead of alcohol in French onion soup? ›

: Yes, I can make french onion soup without alcohol. The traditional recipe calls for a dry white wine, but you can easily replace it with vegetable or chicken broth to make a tasty, non-alcoholic version.

Why are my stuffed mushrooms rubbery? ›

Whether you brush off the dirt with a damp towel or run them under cool water is up to you—the real issue is whether they've been sufficiently dried before they're prepared. Cooking damp mushrooms causes them to steam as the water evaporates. Steaming is what imparts a rubbery, chewy-in-the-bad-way texture.

Why are my stuffed mushrooms dry? ›

If the stuffing is too dry add a bit more stock (it should be very moist). Stuff the mushrooms well and save any remaining stuffing. Why do you put baking soda in French onion soup? ›

The caramelized onions for this soup cook more quickly due to a pinch of baking soda but still have that deep, slow-cooked flavor. Topping the soup with hot, cheesy toasts prepared while the soup simmers, eliminates the need to bake the soup in specialty French onion soup bowls.

Is French onion soup for the poor? ›

Key Ingredients & Substitutions

Cheese: To me, there is no better cheese in a French onion soup than Gruyere! However, shredded Swiss or provolone also works very well. Just be sure to find something that is easily shredded or grated, as that's what will give you that amazing gooey, melty cheese we all love.

Should you wash mushrooms before making stuffed mushrooms? ›

Preventing soggy stuffed mushrooms:

First, when you're cleaning your mushrooms, simply rinse them under cold for only a few seconds before cleaning with a dry paper towel. If you put them under water for too long, you risk your mushrooms growing soggy when baking.

What cheese goes well with mushrooms? ›

When pairing mushrooms with cheese, know that buttons pair well with cream cheese as well as parmesan, maitake hold up to pecorino and fontina, morels mix well with chèvre, oysters prefer nutty alpines, and feta is a good match for shiitake. Keep an eye out for new kinds of cultivated mushrooms hitting the market soon.
